The trap is not renewal but dormancy: a certificate becomes void if for eighteen months the retailer files no returns or files returns showing no sales, which quietly catches seasonal and paused businesses. Register online and the account number is issued immediately with the certificate posted within about ten business days; on paper it can take four weeks. The Department also warns that it does not contract this out, so any third party charging for North Carolina sales tax registration is adding nothing the state requires.
