About each permit

MABCD Contractor License (Class A, B, C and trade licenses) for work in unincorporated Sedgwick County

A contractor working in unincorporated Sedgwick County holds an MABCD contractor license. MABCD's Contractor Licensing page states that its forms are "necessary to obtain a new MABCD building/general contractor's license for unincorporated Sedgwick County, the City of Wichita and small cities in MABCD's jurisdiction", so it is one license: a contractor who already holds the MABCD license for Wichita work needs no second MABCD license for the unincorporated county. MABCD Form #7 (Rev 7/23/2026), the current application, lists two-year fees of $1,000 for Class A, $600 for Class B and $450 for Class C – Residential, and $360 for the trade licenses it lists; MABCD's Table A sheet (Rev. 5/8/2019), linked from MABCD's Fees page, lists the same class fees and $360 for each two-year trade license, including electrical, plumbing, gas fitter and the other listed trades. A new application adds a $50 application fee. Form #7 states that all licenses expire December 31 of every even year with a grace period without penalty through January 31, and that renewals after January 31 cost the license fee plus 25% from February 1 to the end of February and plus 50% after February. A current certificate of insurance for general liability, auto and workers' compensation must be on file before permits or inspections are issued.

Commercial Building Permit (new build, remodel or rebuild; unincorporated Sedgwick County)

Commercial construction, remodelling or rebuilding in unincorporated Sedgwick County is permitted by MABCD. The figures are from MABCD's Building Permit Fees – Table B sheet, which MABCD's current Fees page links as the building permit fee table for both residential and commercial work; the sheet carries the revision mark Rev. 5/8/2019 and does not name an adopting resolution. A commercial new build is priced by total valuation, from $40 for up to $1,000 to $18,328 plus $2.25 per additional $1,000 above $5,000,000, and paragraph 3 of the sheet applies the same valuation table to all remodels and rebuilds. Plan review is charged at 60% of the building permit fee, as MABCD's Fee Table C states. Paragraph 4 of Table B lets the MABCD Director make a temporary, discretionary reduction of up to 20% below the published fees to manage the department's operating reserve. MABCD's Jurisdictions page states that MABCD provides building and housing code enforcement for unincorporated Sedgwick County and the City of Wichita, and that for its contracted small cities "The permitting process will always start with the small city." A project inside Wichita is a City of Wichita permit, listed under the City of Wichita.

Floodplain Development Permit (special flood hazard areas, unincorporated Sedgwick County)

Building or other development in a special flood hazard area of unincorporated Sedgwick County needs a floodplain development permit before work begins; a site outside the mapped flood hazard area has no floodplain permit. County Code §13-4 applies the chapter to all areas of special flood hazard within the unincorporated areas of Sedgwick County, §13-37 states that "A floodplain development permit shall be obtained before construction or development begins within any area of hazard", and §13-43 sets a fee of fifty dollars ($50.00), which must be paid in advance at the time the application is submitted. MABCD's current Fees page lists the same amount as "Floodplain Permit Fee - $50.00 (Sedgwick County Only)". The county code text is the source of the figure; the chapter was adopted by Res. No. 14-2007. This is a Sedgwick County record for a business located in unincorporated Sedgwick County; a business inside Wichita or another city applies under that city's own rules, which stack on the county's state-law framework.

Onsite Wastewater (Septic) System Construction Permit (premises not on public sewer, unincorporated Sedgwick County)

A business premises in unincorporated Sedgwick County that discharges wastewater other than to a public sewer needs an MABCD construction permit before an onsite wastewater system is built; a site on a public sewer has no septic permit. County Code §14-152(a)(1) states that new construction of any onsite wastewater system, or of any structure from which wastewater will be discharged other than to a public sewage system, may not be started until a construction permit has been issued by the director of the Sedgwick County MABCD, and that "Permit regulations may be found in a separate resolution governing issuance of construction and operating permits." Under §14-136 the sanitary code does not apply in incorporated cities. Onsite systems take domestic wastewater only: §14-137 defines domestic wastewater as "all waterborne wastes produced in connection with ordinary living including kitchen, toilet, laundry, shower, and bathtub wastewater" and states that "industrial or commercial wastewater from shops, manufacturing, car washes, etc. is not domestic wastewater", and §14-152(a)(3) bars a system that receives nondomestic wastewater. The fees are as published on MABCD's current Fees page: Wastewater Permit Fee $100.00 and Wastewater Permit for Advanced Systems Fee $200.00; the page is undated.
