About each permit
Zoning Verification Letter
Not every business needs one — it is most often requested by lenders, buyers or new tenants confirming a property's zoning classification before committing to it. The City's current fee schedule lists this flat $250 fee alongside a related $50 Address Change Request and a $250 Board of Zoning Appeals application, both distinct products from this letter.
Building Permit (Commercial)
A Late Permit fee doubles the applicable permit fee when work starts before a permit is obtained, and a Reinspection fee of $50 applies when a scheduled inspection cannot be completed for reasons within the applicant's control. New single-family homes, duplexes and townhouses built to the applicable Electric Vehicle Ready or Solar Ready appendix of the International code qualify for a per-dwelling fee reduction, and the City fully waives the Building Permit fee for homes certified under its own Portfolio Homes program — both genuine incentives layered onto the same fee table, not separate permits.
Sign Permit
It is unlawful to construct, alter or relocate any sign in the City without first obtaining this permit. Each sign requires a separate application, and the application must name the sign contractor's license number where applicable — the same Johnson County contractor license recorded below, since sign installation is one of that license's own trade classes.
Certificate of Occupancy
No new or existing building may be occupied, and no change in use may occur, until the Code Administrator issues a certificate of occupancy. The City's own current fee schedule prices only a Temporary Certificate of Occupancy explicitly — the first one is issued at no charge, and a residential or commercial renewal costs $300 or $500 respectively — so no fee is separately published for a standard, non-temporary certificate of occupancy; as in Wichita, it most likely rides on the underlying building permit fee already charged for the project.
