About each permit
Food Establishment Permit (Initial and Renewal)
Kane County Code §11.5-28(A) makes it unlawful to operate a food establishment within Kane County without a valid permit from the Health Officer, and §11.5-26 applies the article to food establishments within the limits of Kane County, so a restaurant, coffee shop, grocery, daycare kitchen or gym snack bar inside a city or village holds this county permit too. For-profit fees run from $355 to $1,199 by category; charitable nonprofit fees are $468, $399 or $355, and pantries and soup kitchens that charge nothing for any service pay $0. New annual permit applications received after July 1 pay 50% of the fee and after October 1 pay 25%. Renewals paid after December 31 carry a 25% late fee and after January 31 a 50% late fee. All figures are as published on the Kane County Health Department's Environmental Health Permits and Fees page under the heading "FEES EFFECTIVE 1/1/2026 – 12/31/2026" (the 2026 schedule, in effect through December 31, 2026); the page states that all fees are non-refundable and that an annual adjustment equal to the Chicago-area Consumer Price Index increase applies to each fee, never below the schedule effective January 1, 2025. Code §11.5-28 states that the permit year is the calendar year and that failure to pay by December 31 results in expiration of the permit.
